Essential photo montage apps for the iphone

Diptic is an iphone app that lets you combine multiple photos within bordered boxes to create a new image montage.

In this respect its not unlike the app strip designer which also allows you to create boxed cartoon like montages of your images.

Both strip designer and Diptic are valuable apps for creative iphone users and iphoneographers and although Strip designer has more functionality than Diptic this doesn’t mean one app is better than the other.

Diptics simpler interface is probably to its advantage while strip designers functionality is great for when you want to create other cartoon like effects and features such as speach bubbles etc

By the way diptic is a corruption of the Greek word diptychos (meaning folded in two)

Diptych also means:

1 : a 2-leaved hinged tablet folding together to protect writing on its waxed surfaces
2 : a picture or series of pictures (as an altarpiece) painted or carved on two hinged tablets
3 : a work made up of two matching parts

The app provides a variety (at time of writing 19) of box templates into which you can drop photos from your camera roll.

You can also take new photos with your camera to add to the boxes.

Your photos can be repositioned and resized inside each box frame and there are basic image editing tools to brighten up exposure and colors.

Diptic is nice for creating short photo stories or creating a before-and-after sequences.
