The doomsday timer iphone app is oddly named as its main purpose is to let you know when the next Friday 13th will fall (at time of writing 13th Aug 2010 – best stay in bed!) which is slightly misleading as it then sits amongst other doomsday timers in the app store (those Mayans have a lot to answer for)!
A quick check shows that there is an earlier app already named Friday 13th (and a German one – Freitag der 13. – apparently the Germans can be quite superstitious) which has the same functionality hence the name Doomsday timer (of the two I have to say the late entry Doomsday timer has the upper hand when it comes to design if not functionality).
Both apps are based on a simple countdown concept but unlike Friday 13th the Doomsday timer has been executed well with a nice design interface and suitably scary skull motif.
This app is likely to appeal to
- Those suffering from friggatriskaidekaphobia or paraskavidekatriaphobia (Phobia of Friday 13th)
- Those with a macabre sense of humor
- The superstitious and those who just wont put an umbrella up in a house (who often also have OCD so remember to just download this app once guys!)
- Goths and EMO kids who suspect that life isn’t worth living unless their in pain
- Bored housewives who’ve had enough of sleeping with the gardener
The app is free for the time being so get it now as I’m sure if more functionality were added the developer could charge for the app.
- Suggestions would be a clock alarm as well as the countdown on main page so it could be used as a display when docking the iphone to charge (and more practically as an alarm!)
- A calendar function to show when Friday 13th will be in relation to other dates. Perhaps other notable dates to avoid and significant events could be added like Halloween, the sinking of the Titanic, the birth of George Bush etc
- Doomsday timer wallpapers
- A selection of Friday 13th facts, quotes or ‘did you knows’. For example did you know that in numerology, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness, as reflected in the twelve months of the year, twelve signs of the zodiac, twelve hours of the clock, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, twelve gods of Olympus, etc., whereas the number thirteen was considered irregular, transgressing this completeness.
So if you want to sail through Friday 13th by not even knowing what date it is then dont download this however if you relish the thought of Friday 13th then download the app and prepare yourself for the delicious terror that is FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH…

I’m not superstitious in the slightest so suspect it could also just be a day like any other!
What IS that I can see in the garden?
Damn its a a magpie!…”Good morning my Captain!” “Good morning my Captain!” “Good morning my Captain!”
