Sleep Cycle is an alarm clock type app for the iPhone & iPod Touch but it is no ordinary alarm!
This frankly ingenious app measures your sleep pattern through the night and wakes you up when it senses that you’re in your lightest phase of sleep meaning that you feel much more rested and refreshed when you awaken!
Using your iPhone’s accelerometer (the device inside your iphone that detects your phones orientation and movement) it measures how you move about in bed throughout the night.
Scientists have long known that there are a number of stages we pass through while asleep and that we move differently (largley unconciously) depending on on which stage we are in.
This app breaks those stages down into three simple stages:
Deep Sleep (characterised by little movements),
Dreaming sleep (REM sleep – REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement)
and finally being awake!
You place it under the sheet near your pillow (near your head apparently although I have used it at base of bed and it still worked) and set it running!
The app waits for a window of oppertunity (appertunity?) based on the time you said you wanted to awaken and the app chooses a time where you’re most likley to be very lightly asleep!
Another nice touch is it also wakes you up gently – gently with a gradually increasing alarm rather than a sudden loud noise like traditional alarms!
Ive included a screen shot of one of my own ‘sleep graphs’ produced by the app! As you can see I suspect that it wasnt a particularly good night with not much deep sleep and a fair amount of wakefulness!
My only gripe is that I would also like an option that can be switched to where the app actually wakes you during or just after ‘dream sleep’ for those of us who like to (or would like to) remember our dreams for dream journals or for those who are practicing the art of ‘lucid dreaming’!
I have also wondered how this app works for those who share a bed or those with memory foam mattresses as the app would then pick up too much or too little movement?
Another idea would be the ability to upload your sleep data to a central data base as the results would be invaluable for sleep scientists and may reveal patterns across the nation depending on location and time!
Despite this I would heartily recomend this app to anyone and congratulations to the developers for coming up with such an amazing app and then developing and testing it!
